Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is one of the most effective rejuvenation surgeries performed to correct sagging skin, puffiness, and fat bags around the eyes.
This surgery is divided into two main categories, which can be performed alone or simultaneously, depending on the individual's needs:
1. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty
This surgery is mainly used to remove heaviness and excess skin of the upper eyelid.
• How it is performed: An incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid. Excess skin and, if necessary, fat deposits are removed, and then the area is closed with very fine stitches.
• Therapeutic benefits: In addition to beauty, this procedure has a therapeutic (medical) aspect in people whose visual field is limited by severe eyelid drooping.
2. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty
This procedure is mostly performed to eliminate "puffiness" under the eyes and hollows caused by fat displacement.
• Transconjunctival technique (no external incision): If the person only has puffiness and their skin has good elasticity, the surgeon makes the incision from the inside of the eyelid. The big advantage of this procedure is that there is no scar on the face.
• Under-eyelash technique: If the skin under the eyes is loose and wrinkled, an incision is made just below the lash line to remove excess skin.
3. Key points about recovery
• Recovery time: Swelling and bruising usually resolve within 7 to 14 days.
• Stitches: If non-absorbable stitches were used, they are usually removed after 5 to 7 days.
• Protection: Wearing sunglasses is essential for the first few weeks to protect from the sun and wind.
4. The Difference Between Blepharoplasty and Brow Lift
Many people think that they must have eyelid surgery to fix droopy eyelids, when in some cases the main problem is the droopy eyebrow itself, which is pushing the eyelid skin downward. In these cases, the surgeon may recommend an endoscopic brow lift (which we discussed earlier) instead of blepharoplasty.
5. Longevity of Results
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty results usually last between 7 and 10 years, and in some people even longer. Lower eyelid surgery, however, is considered almost permanent, and it is rare for bags under the eyes to return.
Some practical advice:
• If you wear contact lenses, you should wear glasses for about two weeks after surgery.
• It is necessary to stop taking blood thinners (such as aspirin) and supplements that increase the risk of bleeding two weeks before surgery under the supervision of a doctor.
